Support of Always On Availability Cluster

We are in the process of migrating our ASG DB's to an AON Cluster with availability groups. I found an old post regarding the use of a Listener and how ASG deals with this.
My question is as follows:

Is there no way that you can specify the name of the AON listener in the Server connection panel, if not then would the IP address of the Listener work?
