ASG database connecting over VPN
#1
Hello,

we are using ASG 2019 with SQL database for multi users. All local users are connecting to the SQL database in the same LAN. The login works fine and fast.

The problem is now for users which are outside of the local LAN network and connecting via VPN to our LAN. Even with a 100M/bit internet connection it takes around 35 seconds till they are locked in to ASG.

We have traced the network traffic and it looks like the SQL database will be transfered everytime the user connects over the VPN connection to his local computer. Each time nearly 500 MB will be transfered.

Is that correct and is this necessary?

Thanks for your help

Hallo ASG Support,

For anyones convenience I will answer in English :-) I can't answer for sure if the complete database will be transferred on any connect but 500meg is a big database- need to ask devs. I tried retesting it with a 40meg database over VPN and by myself had about 20sec until ASG-RD GUI is fully restored. The only way to change that immediately is to use the setting for offline use, then the database will be cached locally and could be synced back manually or on automatic retry. But then again the sync will need it's time. But starting up in offline mode should work fast. Propably thats a first solution ?

Michael

Hi Michael,

Thanks for your speedy feedback.

In the meantime I have checked the SQL database and the recovery level has been set to "FULL". I have changed now to "Simple". Afterwards I have shrinked the database to around 80 MB.

Tomorrow we can test again with the VPN user and let you know how this went. Of course we expect it should be faster but some of our clients have a slow Internet connection and therefore every MB counts.

For your information: Yes the database is huge. We are using a lot of customized icons and have a lot of connections.

I will keep you posted.

ASG-RD is loading most of the database content at the beginning and afterwards it is using cached data. This of course is causing slower application start up but afterwards fast reaction on any user input. As you can't reduce the amount of objects in your environment the only way to reduce the data that is loaded is to ensure that the logs are not getting to big - there are options to deactivate or shrink to max amount of data for every log.

I know that a slow connection might result in a slow start - but I think it's better to wait once for 30 seconds than have a 2-3 second delay on every click on an object. Permissions, inheritance and so on must be loaded for every object and that would require many database accesses if the data would not be cached.
