ASG Implementation
#1
Hi All,
I am new here and I hope to get some feedback on the implementation and configation of ASG remote.
I basically installed ASG remote using a service account. This service account has DB owner permisions on the DB. The installation was successful.
The issues are, I cannot launch ASG remote with any other account, it only works with the service account used for the installation.
I also need some help configuring ASG to include all the servers within an AD forest.

Please put me in the right direction if these questions had been answered in the past.

Many thanks,

Rabee.

How did you configure the access? With integrated security - then your Windows Account need permission to access the database - have a look into the help files (by pressing F1) - Working with environments=>Working in database mode=>Necessary permissions on SQL server instance - there you will find the needed permissions!

To add all servers from an ActiveDirectory just add a new folder - edit the folder select "Roles" and activate "Active Directory" - then you can specify your AD branch and do a sync of your servers!

If you need any more help please let me know...

Hi Oliver,
Thanks for the prompt reply.
I am still having some issues with my ASG. I cannot launch the application even using the service account which I installed it with.
where do I find the logs for this application?
I am going through the help file slowly.
much appreciated,
Rabee.

Would be very helpful if you directly post error messages or problem details - so we can help! "have some issues" is difficult to support :-)

If you even can't login to the app there are no logs - please add attachment of the error message or post the details in plain text...

But the requirements for the users on SQL instance are described in detail in the help (told you the chapter in my first answer) - please check all permissions - for testing you always can first try to use dbo and then step by step try with less permissions!

Hi Oliver,

The login issues have been resolved by assigning everyone DBO access at the DB.
I have another question, is there a light client that connects to an existing DB? or should I use the ASG remote installer and point it to the pre-configured DB.
Also, do you have idea around possible performance degradation or improvement if we switch from direct RDP to ASG.

There is no "light client" - but of course you can connect to an existing database - just choose "Environment=>Environment Manager" - "Add=>Database" - and there choose the option to Connect to an existing database...

What kind of performance problems do you have? You can set all rdp properties of a connection - just goto the properties dialog of a connection - choose "Roles" and add RDP role - then you are able to choose all rdp properties! It is the same RDP client as MSTSC.exe - we use just the ActiveX-control of it

I do not have any performace issues at this stage, I am just wondering if anyone has registered performace degredation when using ASG.

Also, ASG cashed twice today as I was reading the help file and trying to do different things.

Here is the error from eventviewer

Any ideas why did it carsh?
is there any log files for this app?

There are 3 different browsers integrated in ASGRD - you can choose the default in Settings=>HTTP - just try to use another one (when using Chromium / Gecko you need to install vcredist-package)

You find the error in Logs=>Error logs - but not always this really helps more - your error in Windows.UI.Xaml.dll was reported before - but we don't use this dll directly so it's an error that occurs in one of the components we use in ASGRD - can't do anything

Hi Oliver,
I am trying to work out the credentials on each folder with the tree view.
I am getting a tick box saying
Hint: Activate to save the following values with multi-edit.
The application is licensed as you can see the attachment
So far I have not been able to save the credential and other settings correctly

If you want to set credentials via multi-edit check the box left of the credentials and select a credential in the dropdown - on the top of the dialog you can choose also to set the "Usage" - that means you can save the values that should be used - you can have on each object "Default - Inherited - Personal" values that you want to use

What is not working - did you check the box left of credentials and choose a credential object? Then pressed OK? The values should be saved for all items that you have selected...

Hi Oliver,
Thanks for your reply.

Couple of more questions
1. Does ASG remote support database failover?
2. Where does ASG stores users data such as favourite and tree view

We basically are going to implement ASG-remote, but we're trying to lock general users down,

Thanks

Hi,

yes ASGRD supports failover - when configuring a database environment there is a checkbox "Configure advanced settings" - if this is activated you can set failover partner in the next wizard page

If you are running ASGRD in database mode - all data will be stored in the database!

Hi Oliver,
Can you explain how can I apply the same settings accross all the users with an AD group or under a folder structre in ASG.
Please explain what do these two tick boxes do(please see attachment).
Cheers.

Hi,

if you use public objects these objects can be used by all users (who have permission) - private objects can only be seen by the creator.

At the top of the properties dialog you find "Default / Inherited / Personal" values - this is valid for each category in the properties dialog (left tree) - so you can choose to have Default values that are accessible for all users, personal values if you want to override with personal settings (make sense in Display settings or assigned credentials) - and you can use the Inherited values from parent object - so you can easily set options that are used for all child objects. This is also explained in one of the basic introduction videos!

If you "Multi-Edit" items you can remove Default settings for all selected items or you can set the "Usage" - this is the option if you want to use "Default / Inherited / Personal" values - this can be done for each category of the Properties categories!

The best way is to set options and Inherit whenever you can - so can easily change settings only on the root / parent item and all childs that use the Inherited Values will have the same properties!

Hope you understand how it works! Just try a little bit to understand - it's quite easy
