ASG starts very slow
#1
Hi,

I have the an issue when starting ASG Remote Desktop. It seems the application is getting slower with all new versions. I did some timing:

Starting Online:

Starting the application takes 40-60 secs
Loading data takes 20 secs

Starting Offline:

Starting the application takes 20-25 secs
Loading data: immediately (makes sense)
Refreshing data after getting online: 15 secs (during the loading ASG gets a 'not responding' status)

ASG details: Remote desktop 2020, version 13.0.6833.1
Windows details: Windows 10 Enterprise 20H2, OS build 19042.928, 64-bit
Laptop: Processor Intel® Core™ i7-10750H CPU @ 2.60GHz  2.59 GHz, RAM 32 GB, 1 TB SSD,
Connection: Wifi

Pinging the SQL server takes 30 ms

I read in another thread that I should tru to test if running the application elevated. I did: no difference in the timing

Please can you help solving this issue.

Kind regards

Ed

Ok - you can check some possible issues...

First - did you run the "Data Optimizer"? Perhaps some data could be optimized...
Can you check the size of your logs? In Settings=>Logs you can set maximum log entries to prevent too much data must be loaded...
One startup delay could be the update check - did you turn off "Always check fopr news and updates"?

Hi,

Data Optimizer: no impact
I checked the log settings a few weeks ago: the database became smaller but this had no impact:

Database : ASGRDProd

Datum    Allocated (MB)    Maximum Size Comparative To Maximum Allocated
======== =============== =============== ======================================================================
20210418              41      UNLIMITED ###############
20210411              41      UNLIMITED ###############
20210404            191      UNLIMITED ######################################################################
20210328            189      UNLIMITED #####################################################################
20210321            188      UNLIMITED ####################################################################

Unchecked the check: no impact

I would imagine that starting the application and loading the data are 2 different stages. The loading of the data doesn't take that long, it's starting the application!

Can this be caused by the fact we use integrated (AD) login?

Do you have the status bar active? You can activate in Settings=>Layout (Hide status bar)

In the status bar you can see what action is currently in progress on startup - like Loading data, clear logs, setting layout - can you see that there is one of these taking a long time???

That's exactly what I mean. It takes 40 secs to get the initial screen showing the application is started. Then it starts showing loading and from then on it takes 15-20 secs.

Did you check the option "Check for news & Updates"??? That is one of the first actions - and in some cases it could take some time...

Do you use the login dialog? Or "Pass Through"? Would like to know if it could take a long time to load your ActiveDirectories? All trusted domains are read at the beginning - but normally that should not take much time...

But a lot of things do not happen before the screen appears - or do you have any command line options that you perhaps do not remember?!? Just guessing for the right direction...

Hi,

I don't get a login dialog. in the environment manager I use 'Use integrated authentication'. In the settings -> Domain I have an entry with our domain and mu account.

Hi,

Interesting:

I had some issue with my laptop and went to the office to get a new image. Afterwards I re"installed ASG RD and it was very fast. It started loading the data within 4-5 secs. Afterwards I went back home and tested the connection again. Back to 40 secs.

I'm connected using wifi, but I have a fast connection. Pinging the SQL server takes around 30ms, same for my domain server.

Is there a other protocol which you use to get all your required data besides TCP. Perhaps we are running in a time out.

Hi Ed,
we just just use standard ports for any services. Some of them are editable in settings, for example used ports in the protocols and some are just standards like AD sync or SQL-ports.
